What is "the Orenburg down shawls"?
“Orenburg
down shawls” is the collective name
of the down kerchiefs, wraps, shawls knitted of the finest in the world down of
Orenburg goat and the basis (cotton, silk or
synthetic fiber). Goat down is the thinnest underwool that grows at the basis
of the hair of Orenburg goats. It is combed out manually by special “combs”,
but not cut down as other types of down and wool. During the year there can be
combed out no more than 350 g (0.6-0.7
ounces) of down of one Orenburg goat. This down has the unique
thermoregulatory properties: the goats do not feel cold in winter in hard frost
and strong wind and do not overheat in summer. The down of Orenburg goats in the thinnest in the world,
it has the thickness of the hair 14-16 micron, and the mohair that follows it
has the thickness of 22-24 micron. Besides with this thickness it is solider
than wool. The secret of this down is that it grows only on Orenburg goats that are raised in Orenburg region (region of Russia). Multiple attempts of the
specialists to raise Orenburg goats in other regions of the
worlds were not successful: the goats degrade and the down hardens. Only in
strong climatic conditions of Orenburg region (dry hot summer and frosty
windy winter) such unique down forms on the goats. After the collapse of the USSR the industrial raising of Orenburg goats stopped and now their
livestock is limited. Nowadays they are raised at small family farms. These
circumstances give the Orenburg dawn shawls its exclusive unique. Orenburg down shawl is one of the most
unique symbols of Russia.
